Puppy Love or Passionate Liaison?

With Abraham now permanently out of the picture, could Eugene’s puppy love for Rosita blossom into a full-blown relationship?

It’s probably safe to say that Rosita is not in a good place emotionally right now. Last season on The Walking Dead, Abraham left her in favor of Sasha. Shortly thereafter, she was rounded up with the rest of the group. She had to watch as Negan then bashed Abraham’s head in with a baseball bat.

In The Walking Dead comic books, Rosita later develops a relationship with Eugene. (Spoilers ahead.) The two even get married and live together happily until her death at the hands of the Whisperers.

As fans of both the comic and show know, producers often deviate from those pre-established storylines, though.

“We talk about all the [comic] storylines on set like little kids getting fascinated to see where the show is going to go and what’s going to happen,” says actress Christian Serratos, who plays Rosita. “We’re not lying when we say we really get no information. We have no idea what’s going to happen on the show. We have no idea what’s going to happen episode to episode. We wait patiently with everyone else.”

Rosita/Eugene…”Rosgene”? “Eugita?”

So what are the odds we could see a Rosita/Eugene relationship on the show? “I think that would be really interesting,” says Serratos. “I also think it would be interesting if that didn’t happen. Scott Gimple has a really amazing way of keeping very true to the comic while also keeping it very interesting, meaning he doesn’t necessarily put everything that happens in the comic book in the show. There’s definitely a spin on the show, and I think that’s what’s really interesting and what keeps people fascinated is that they really don’t know what’s coming next, even when they think they do.”

Don’t Judge a Book by its Mullet

The comic book Rosita has a hard time getting past Eugene’s physical appearance. Don’t expect to see that addressed on screen, though. “I don’t think that’s something that would be included in the show,” Serratos said. “I think if there was a romance between Eugene and Rosita, it would be very natural because they have such an unspoken bond on the show already. I definitely wouldn’t think that would be weird for them to get together at all. I think it would be a very special thing.”

Time will tell whether Eugene and Rosita have a future together, but one thing’s for sure — we’ll be watching.
