Missy Robertson is making progress on shaving Jase’s beard. It’s only a matter of time.
The #ShaveJase campaign (photo via Mia Moo Fund) “Who, besides Missy, would like to see a clean-shaven Jase?” the family say on the Mia Moo Fund website, an organization set on helping kids born with cleft lip and palate, as their daughter Mia was.
As of this writing, they’re almost a third of the way to their goal of $100,000.
“I thought that was pretty good considering we had only started a couple of weeks before,” Jase told the Clarion-Ledger.
And he’s really hoping they reach the goal — not so he can have a clean-shaven face, but so they can help more kids.
“One out of 800 kids in some way have a cleft lip or a cleft palate,” he said. “If it’s just a cleft lip, usually you can have a couple of surgeries and you’re pretty much good to go.”
But if a child is born with both a cleft lip and a cleft palate, Jase says, that’s where things gets difficult, “there is no way to correct it.”
“They just manage it because as you grow, since it wasn’t right, they have to constantly manage it and schedule surgeries,” he said. “They’re not guessing but they’re trying to manage it. Last year they had to break her top jaw and move it forward and then she had to wear a brace for 14-16 hours a day.”
And when it comes to raising funds for kids like Mia, Jase and Missy take it very seriously.
“We give 100 percent of what we bring in,” Jase said. “Missy’s Aunt (Bonny Jones) runs it for us but we pay her out of our own pocket. She interviews the families and sets us the program.”
