The movie Mile 22 has been in the works for some time now. Actor Mark Wahlberg hasn’t starred in a straight-up action flick since 2 Guns back in 2013. He’s done edgy Indies like The Gambler and Mojave, blockbuster comedies like Ted 2 and Daddy’s Home 2, and serious sagas like Ridley Scott’s All the Money in the World.
Wahlberg has been looking for a proper action trilogy. Mile 22 looks like it will be the first of the trio. It could be his Lethal Weapon, Mission Impossible, Bourne Identity or James Bond-like franchise. It would only make sense that he would team up with director Peter Berg for such a film.
Berg got his start directing television and with 2003’s action-comedy, The Rundown, which starred The Rock and Sean William Scott. Berg got serious when he shot The Kingdom with Jamie Foxx in 2007. Then, with Wahlberg in the driver’s seat, he shot true-story action dramas, Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day.
The Wahlberg-Berg trilogy of true stories helped the duo make their mark. Now, both are clearly experts in the field and they’re looking to franchise. If that’s not exciting enough, they’re bringing The Walking Dead’s Lauren Cohan, iconic actor John Malkovich, and former UFC fighter Ronda Rousey along for the ride.
If that’s not enough, they’ve also signed on Iko Uwais from The Raid to bring even more realism to the action sequences. The trailer just came out and it is intense.
