Fans Surprised By Season 8 Trailer

Fans were shocked when they saw the end of the Season 8 SDCC teaser trailer. After various shots of war and battles from “All Out War,” the trailer slowed down to show a cane and a version of Old Man Rick with short grey hair a trimmed beard in a bed.

The cane is a direct reference to the comic book, but it also means the shot is pretty far out into the future. In Issue 127, there’s a two-year time jump between the war with Negan and the future war with the Whisperers.

During that time, Rick’s look changed, and he now has an injured leg, hence the cane.

The new season premieres on October 22, but it’s unclear how the new season may use the adaption or the time jump. There could be episodes that start to flash forward and backwards, similar to the final seasons of Lost.

“I was shocked and kind of excited by it,” said Andrew Lincoln. “My instinct was, what a great storytelling device. That was my instinct. I thought it was very interesting, and also gives us an opportunity to do something else a little ahead of the game, which I think is very, very neat.”

Lincoln can’t confirm the time jump at this point, but he did add, “It’s a gray Rick. It’s an older Rick. So by virtue of the fact that you see, that means that it’s in the future.”

The next questions are “When?” or “How far in the future?” According to the lead of the show, “It will become somewhat clearer after the October premiere. Then again, it may not be. It may be still is somewhat opaque.”

Some other major plot points occur during the time jump like Maggie having her baby, but it’s hard to imagine the series would skip over that pivotal point as they decide what adaptations make it to television.

What do you think this means for the future of the series?
