The End Of Sex?

Okay, don’t get too worried, I guess? But if American bioethics professor Hank Greeley has anything to do with it, sex will no longer be necessary, which may bring about a very dismal future for human reproduction. Sorry Amy & Sheldon, the plan for a baby on the show may be quite different – they may not need you afterall! That is, if the producers read Professor Greeley’s book entitled, “The End of Sex.”

If you watched Thursday’s The Big Bang Theory, Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik) performed a spectacular experiment in which they combined their skin cell samples to a neural network. After the success of the experiment, Sheldon wants to move to the next level and extend the experiment to make a baby.

According to TV Guide, the episode strengthens the possibility that maybe someday, Sheldon could become a father. Perhaps season 11 will highlight the coming of another Big Bang baby! I actually have a piece on this theory too.

More On The Theory

As for Greeley’s theory, what he means is not actually the end of sex. Whew! He believes in the point that the rich and wealthy will no longer have reproductive sex because they will opt to make babies “on spec.” They will want to make sure that the baby is healthy as needed, with the desired IQ, special traits and nice eyes. Oh, so possibly more like Sheldon?

Greeley, according to Cosmos Magazine, is convinced that people would want to understand the embryo that would become their child as much as possible. Greeley is enthusiastic, as well as optimistic, that people in the future will have a child using iPS cell technology. They will use iPS for creating plenty of embryos and making the process entirely instrumental.

Thoughts

I’m sorry, I don’t care how rich you are. I don’t think this will happen on the scale that Greeley thinks it will. What I mean by that is yes, I think this technology (if ever fully possible) will be utilized. But hopefully only for those who have been unsuccessful in conceiving. I really hope it’s not because they dislike physical intimacy, but that may be it. Why do I think it would only be this select group?

Well, for starters this technology would be wicked expensive. But my main reason is simple. Most people enjoy sex. I’m sorry if I sound a little blunt, but hey, it’s the truth. Famous and important people have ruined their careers over sex. And, this isn’t just a recent thing. Sex scandals have happened all throughout history at all costs.

I don’t think sex is ever going to completely fade. So, no need to get alarmed over this piece. It is human nature to have these feelings after all. Even Dr. Sheldon has these urges now! Let’s not forget that he enjoyed his first time with Amy Farrah Fowler.
