I recently read a post about Daryl Dixon. The post reflected on the importance of Norman Reedus’ character. Is Daryl really a needed character in the show? The purpose of the character in the show is to allow a character who is known to fly off his rocker from time to time. Each character in the Walking Dead comic has outburst of rage from time to time. Not in the Walking Dead show though. Characters in the show are more balanced to each of their own trait of character. For example, Daryl allows Rick to stay composed and patient.

Even though Daryl is not in the Walking Dead comic, he is easily one of the most popular characters on the show. Fans would rather fight then see Daryl removed from the show. There are even shirts that say, “If Daryl Dies We Riot!” I can relate, no matter how cliché it sounds, Daryl is my favorite character on the show. Other characters who are still alive in the comic have already been removed from the show. So why does Daryl still have a spot on the show?

Daryl Dixon isn’t in the Walking Dad ComicNorman’s character has added a lot of opportunity for great plots in the story. Merle would have never been in the show the way he was had Daryl not been introduced. A few other characters in the show have been see to fly off the handle from time to time, but Daryl is always on the same side. His crossbow has also become a favorite weapon among fans.

Daryl Dixon isn’t in the Walking Dead Comic

The Walking Dead Comic has been running for more than 13 years. The comic is one of the most successful comics in recent years, and they’ve done just fine without Daryl as a character. I’m personally glad to have Norman Reedus on the show, I’ve thought he was a badass since Boondock Saints. Boondock Saints elevated Reedus to stardom with a cult like following.

Could the Walking Dead television show have made it this far without Norman Reedus and Daryl Dixon? My initial guess is probably not the way it has. Daryl simply throws a dynamic into the show that no one else could have done so well. I have been wrong before, so maybe it would have worked. The show could have taken on a different edge if each character was subject to random fits of rage. The anger does make sense considering the state of the world. The Walking Dead may have been even more intense than it already is if each person would operate with more ranges of emotions. There may have been less room for character development had the creators written the show without Daryl. These are just some thoughts that have gone through my mind. What are your thoughts?
