Has anything so graphic and violent as Glenn & Abraham’s deaths on The Walking Dead ever been recreated in Lego before? Probably not.
By now, we’ve all had time to settle down after the brutal deaths of Glenn and Abraham on the season premiere of The Walking Dead. (Or have we? Will we ever actually settle down from that event?) At any rate, many fans have said the episode was so traumatic, they’ll never watch it again. Others were only able to watch at all through their fingers as they covered their faces with their hands. Still others (like my wife, *cough* *cough*) were unable to watch the death scenes at all; they either left the room or completely averted their eyes. Well, maybe this new version of the scene will help them out.
The Lego Walking Dead
YouTube user kristo499 has painstakingly recreated the entire sequence using Legos. The audio is all from the actual episode, though. So you’ll still hear Jeffrey Dean Morgan’s chilling rant as Negan. You’ll hear Abraham’s final “suck my nuts” insult. Glenn’s heartbreaking “Maggie, I will find you” is still there. And, yes, you’ll still hear every crunch and crack of Negan’s bat, Lucille.
It may seem odd to recreate such a graphic scene using children’s toys. But if there’s anything we’ve learned from The Lego Movie, it’s that Legos are not just for kids — they’re for everyone. In fact, recreating popular movie trailers and scenes using Legos has become something of a cottage industry. There are hundreds of Lego videos like this on YouTube.
Even the creator of this particular video is no rookie. A quick glance at his YouTube history shows that kristo499 has been making Lego Walking Dead videos for years now. That’s not all, though. He’s got dozens of other Lego recreations, too. You could easily lose a few productive hours watching all of them.
A Good Recreation — Too Good, In Fact
The Negan/Abraham/Glenn video is very well done. Almost all of the Lego characters closely resemble their onscreen counterparts. (Though I had a little trouble picking out Daryl at first). Lego Negan did make me laugh, though, when I realized his leather jacket was taken from a “Mutt Williams” Indiana Jones figure. (In case you’ve forgotten, Mutt was Indy’s illegitimate son, played by Shia Labeouf in the best-left-forgotten fourth film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull).
One word of warning, though: the gore in the Lego version is perhaps actually worse than the live-action original. You might have assumed a spray of red Legos would come oozing out of Glenn and Abraham’s necks. You would be wrong. Some sort of gross gelatinous substance is used instead. It might be cranberry sauce. Whatever it is, it’s nasty. Even Glenn’s bulging eyeball is recreated with surprising accuracy.
No Excuses
So remember, if a friend or co-worker tells you they couldn’t bring themselves to watch The Walking Dead last Sunday, you now have a proper response. “Could you watch it in LEGO?”
