The bond between a loving father and his son his unmistakable. You can see it in the way they play together, talk to each other, and treat each other.
But this story truly shows how that love can play out.
Dick Hoyt, a military man, and his son, Rick, did something together that only strengthened their relationship.
When Rick was born, a doctor told his parents the unthinkable: “Put him away, put him in an institution. He’s going to be nothing but a vegetable for the rest of his life.”
But Rick’s parents didn’t give up on him. They loved him. They wanted to hear him speak, so they had a computer built to help him do that. His first words were “Go Bruins,” a hockey team that was going for the Stanley Cup that year.
Little did anyone know or expect, Rick — not anything like a vegetable — ran a race with his father as an adult.
