The Verdict On Trump’s Tax Returns Is Finally Here…
From the moment Donald Trump started winning during the election season, the left began asking for his tax returns.
They were hoping they would find out that he had somehow managed to avoid paying taxes. Now, they have managed to illegally obtain his return from 2005. It is safe to say their hope was extinguished.
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow tweeted about having the return and promised her fans a first-look at the 1040 on her show. Except there was only one problem with her “exclusive” story. The White House knew she had it, and released the information 20 minutes before her show aired.
Maddow was left mumbling and stumbling for over 30 minutes before she was able to get around to discussing the numbers. She was crushed again. In 2005, Trump made $150 million–and paid $38 million in taxes. Almost a third of his income. He paid more in federal taxes than Comcast– and Obama.
The return was given to Maddow by Pulitzer prize-winning journalist, David Cay Johnston, who asserted that he received it “unsolicited in the mail.” However, Maddow’s night was ruined even further, when the White House made what could be called a…
The White House issued a statement highlighting the network’s desperation in publishing a decades-old tax return saying:
“You know you are desperate for ratings when you are willing to violate the law to push a story about two pages of tax returns from over a decade ago,”
The unauthorized release or publishing of tax returns is a criminal offense, punishable by up to five years in jail and a $5000 fine. However, Maddow claimed it was their “First Amendment right” to publish documents that serve the public interest.
Regardless of the legality of their actions, they undeniably just got played like a fiddle. They say that “he who laughs last, laughs longest.” Perhaps, President Trump will still be laughing in the White House in 2020 after this failed stunt.
