Has Eugene Joined The Dark Side?

At first glance, it looks like Eugene has decided to just dive into the whole “I’m Negan” thing, feet first. He’s got a new room, a few female fans, appreciation from his boss, and a jar of pickles with his name on it.

For fans, it looks like Eugene has decided to just go ahead and cross over to the dark side. In fact, he switched sides faster than Nazi Col. Hans Landa at the end of Inglorious Basterds.

One Redditt user thinks that there’s more to Eugene than meets the eye.

Eugene Is After The Long Con

The fan believes that Eugene is being wiser than Daryl, who acted merely within the pride he’s always shown. Daryl tried to escape immediately when Negan tested him by unlocking the door. Eugene sees the long con.

Eugene was offered a chance to poison Negan. From the audience perspective, it looks like this was a real opportunity versus a test like Daryl had. Regardless, Eugene turned down the offer. The fan believes this is because he has a better idea.

Perhaps Eugene and Dwight both have bigger plans.

Eugene and Dwight, Together

In the episode, both Dwight and Eugene are pretending to be people that they are not. Eugene looks like he has turned towards darkness, but at the same time, it looks like Dwight has turned back to the light. Sure, this got the doctor killed, but he’s against Negan, which means he must be pro-Rick.

Redditor MrLonelyWolf writes:

“Eugene explicitly highlights this in his statement – ‘I’m Eugene, you’re Dwight’ – firstly an admittance that Eugene knows Dwight isn’t truly bad and secondly a reminder to them both of their past selves. He’s telling Dwight that they are who they were and always will be. Stating “we are Negan” is purely an affirmation of the story they’ve both created. Neither truly are Negan, but Eugene is essentially saying, ‘Remember, we’re both who we always have been, but while we’re here in the Sanctuary, we’re Negan.'”

Fans are hoping that Eugene hasn’t completely turned evil as Eugene is a major asset for Alexandria. If this theory is correct, the show is turning more Game of Thrones and less Lost, which is very much a good thing.

Do you think Eugene will stay loyal to Rick Grimes and the gang?
