Sheldon Cooper’s Top of the Line Nerd Laptop
Geeks come in all shapes, sizes, levels, and speeds. There are certain factors that determine whether a person can be classified as a geek and at what level. In here we are using geek and nerd interchangeably for those of you who are for sure yelling at your screen that there is a difference. Things that affect the level of geekiness include gaming gear, video games, your laptop, how much time you spend on games, movies you like, whether you call tech support or are you your own, and possibly whether or not all of your friends are geeks.
Sheldon and His Alien
Here we will be taking a look at Sheldon Cooper’s video game rig. In the early seasons, it was noted that he used a Mac until season 3 when his and Leonard’s were stolen. From then on, we can see Sheldon using an Alienware laptop, more specifically an Alienware M17X laptop (see picture above).
Here are some of the specs:
- Battery life: 3 hours
- Keyboard: Backlit and changes color
- CPU: Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9300
- GPU: 1 GB nVidia GeForce 280m
- RAM: 4 GB
- Hard drive: 2 160 GB
- Resolution: 1900 x 1200
- USB: 4 ports
This computer was released in 2009 for a shiny price of $3,849. Today you can get a gaming laptop that has better specs for a smaller price tag.
Alienware’s parent company is Dell. The company is headquartered in Miami, Florida. Its top competitors in the gaming laptop niche include Asus, MSI, Razor, and Origin. While each company has its strengths and weaknesses, Alienware is known for its design as well as its bells and whistles. The shape of the computer in and of itself is unique and can be identified even before seeing the logo. This company is known as the gaming laptop company. However, Asus does tend to outstrip Alienware in specs and has lower prices.
A Gamer’s World
Why would anyone spend $3K on a laptop when you can buy much cheaper ones that have longer battery life? As we see in The Big Bang Theory, gaming defines part of a geek’s life. If you spend that many hours staring at a screen, then the experience had better be amazing and smooth. So gamers are willing to put out a month’s worth of salary in order to have the greatest gaming experience possible.
Say what you will about their personal lives, but the geeks of The Big Bang Theory at least have good taste in their electronics!
