2. GOP State Legislature Control

For the first time in history since World War II, the Democratic party has lost twice the average number of seats lost by the political party of an outgoing president. Democrats experienced a net loss of 958 seats in the state Senates and Houses, the largest since the 1940’s. Only over 20 states, most of them small states on either coast, currently have a Democratic majority.

3. Map of Partisan Distribution of State Governors

Despite having a Democratic president, the Republicans are leading the majority of the states with 31 Republican state governors – the greatest number in several generations. 60% of the country’s population have Republicans in their governor’s office. Only 18 states have governors who are Democrats, with one state being led by an independent candidate supported by the Democrats.

4. Obama Wiped Out Young Democrats

This is a map of all the states that voted “more conservative” in 2016, showing that support for the Democrats has largely dwindled. PBS reports that Obama “all but wiped out a generation of young Democrats” as his tenure resulted in “the greatest number of losses under any president in decades”.

5. Former Obama Strongholds that Voted for Trump

This map from the Washington Post shows that Trump delivered on his promise to flip Obama strongholds in the Industrial midwest, even winning the votes of swing states that have never gone Republican in decades. One-third of the counties that voted Obama once or twice have switched over to Trump in the 2016 elections.
