A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

The painting, depicting police officers as pigs, was done based on the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO.

This controversial picture has been hanging in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol building since June of 2016. The picture, drawn by a high school senior, was the winning piece in an art contest held by Democratic Rep. Lacy Clay back in May.

Over 27,000 law enforcement personnel have complained about the painting. Many police organizations have written Speaker Paul Ryan demanding it is taken down.

But, the picture has remained hanging. Even after five Dallas police officers were killed and 12 more were wounded in an ambush on July 7th.

Andy Maybo, President of the FOP in D.C., told the Daily Caller that “During a time in our society when tensions are so high that someone can be offended by a single word, this painting does nothing but attack law enforcement to its core.”

Many Congressional Republicans agree with Maybo–one was brave enough to take it down.

Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Ca), a former Marine, said he took down the painting “because he was angry” according to Fox News. After seeing multiple reports, Duncan took action.

Even though he returned the painting to Rep. Clay’s office, Democrats are furious.

Then they did the unthinkable…

Rehung the Painting

A joint statement from Rep. Clay and the Congressional Black Caucus said,

“The rehanging of this painting for public view represents more than just protecting the rights of a student artist, it is a proud statement in defense of the 1st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which guarantees freedom of expression to every American.”

According to the Independent Journal Review, Clay has consistently referred to the art work as “[the] most creative expression that I’ve witnessed over the last 16 years.”

But Rep. Hunter is not backing down. The congressman has boldly said that he “will take it down again.”

President-elect Trump has promised to end the assault on law enforcement.
