One of the things Disney’s 2013 film Frozen was famous for was breaking conventions. Fans of female empowerment were particularly impressed. Instead of the typical damsel-in-distress princess story, it was a film about the love between two sisters. There was a love interest for Anna, but the blossoming relationship with Kristoff was not the story’s focus. Now, with Frozen 2 beginning production, many fans are hoping producers will turn their attention to Elsa.
When the sequel was first announced, fans pounced on the idea of giving Elsa a girlfriend. After all, the first film offered no hints about Elsa’s orientation, so there’s no reason she couldn’t be gay. And revealing such a well-known character as a lesbian would be impressive toward normalizing LGBT relationships in the media.
A wildly popular campaign was started on Twitter and other social media platforms using the hashtag #GiveElsaAGirlfriend. There were even petitions created with thousands of signatures.
Actress and singer Idina Menzel is in favor of the idea. Menzel gave voice to Elsa in the original Frozen and will return for Frozen 2. On a recent appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Menzel told guest host Miley Cyrus, “I am all for it. I think it’s wonderful.”
She did admit, though, that even though she supports the idea, she has no influence on the producers, “I can’t promise anyone that it’s going to happen because I’m a servant to Disney,” said Idina. “I love Disney and I work for Disney.”
Anna and Elsa Weigh In
Both Menzel and actress Kristen Bell, who plays Anna, also appeared on The Tyler Oakley Show on Ellen’s Digital Network. Oakley asked Bell, “There’s been speculation on the Internet about Elsa potentially being a lesbian. Can you confirm that?”
Bell had no secrets to share, however: “Whatever Elsa wants to do is up to her and it’s up to us to support her.”
Menzel was tight-lipped as well. “I cannot confirm or deny,” she said. “If I tell you, I would have to kill you.”
“I think in Frozen 1, she was young and so she was still figuring stuff out,” Menzel continued. When asked if there was a potential Disney character that Elsa could date, Menzel offered, “Tinkerbell?”

Let It Go (For Real)
Menzel also revealed to Miley Cyrus that her own son is sick of hearing “Let it Go.”
“I’m sorry, Disney, but [Walker] is sick of ‘Let It Go.’ He hates mommy singing it.”
Cyrus and Menzel also bonded over their separate histories with Disney. (Cyrus was the star of Hannah Montana on The Disney Channel from 2006-2011).
“I’m a servant to Disney,” joked Menzel.
“Trust me, that makes two of us,” said Cyrus. “Welcome! No one knows that better than me, baby!”
Menzel also revealed she had been so excited to work with Disney, she didn’t even think about negotiating a better paycheck. She’s certain she was the lowest paid of all the Frozen voice actors.
“I was just like, ‘I can be on Disney! Yeah, I want to do it!’”
Frozen 2 is currently being written by Jennifer Lee. Chris Buck will share directing duties with Lee. Lee wrote and co-directed the original Frozen with Buck, as well. There is no release date at this time.
