Captain Jack is back! That’s right, Johnny Depp will return as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. The fifth installment of the successful series will hit theaters on May 26, 2017. And we have the first poster and trailer for the new film!

In Dead Men Tell No Tales, Jack Sparrow’s old rival, Captain Salazar, is tracking him down with his crew of ghost pirates. Captain Salazar has just escaped from Devil’s Triangle (also known as the Bermuda Triangle). He wants to kill every pirate on the open sea. Captain Jack searches for the Trident of Poseidon, an ancient artifact that will give him control over the oceans and allow him to defeat Salazar.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales — The Teaser Trailer

There’s no sign of Captain Jack Sparrow in the first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, but he’s definitely the focus of everyone’s attention:

The Making of Another High-Seas Adventure

Johnny Depp is joined by fellow returning actors Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbosa and Kevin McNally as Gibbs. Spanish actor Javier Bardem plays the villainous Captain Salazar.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales will also feature the return of Orlando Bloom as Will Turner. Bloom appeared in the first three films, but was not in the fourth film. Australian actor Brenton Thwaites plays Henry, Will Turner’s son. He’s on a quest to reconnect with this father, but a powerful curse prevents it from happening.

Screenwriter Jeff Nathanson wrote the script for Dead Men Tell No Tales. The new film was directed by the Norwegian team of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg. Their 2012 film, Kon-Tiki, was nominated for Best Foreign Langauge Film at the 85th Annual Academy Awards.

In addition to the first trailer, Disney has also released a new teaser poster for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales:

Pirates of the Caribbean Plunders the Box Office

The Pirates of Caribbean film series began in 2003 as an adaptation of the popular Disney theme park attraction. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl was a massive success. The film grossed over $650 million worldwide. Johnny Depp was even nominated for an Academy Award for his portrayal of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Two sequels were then filmed back-to-back. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest was released in 2006 to mixed reviews. Nonetheless, it was a smash hit — the fastest film at the time to hit $1 billion in worldwide revenues. The next year, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End was released as an end to the trilogy. With a budget of over $300 million, it was the most expensive film ever released to that point.

In 2011, Disney released Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It was the first film without Orlando Bloom or actress Keira Knightly. It was a standalone sequel, featuring actor Ian McShane as Blackbeard and Penélope Cruz as Angelica. (Ironically, Cruz is married to Javier Barden, the villain in Dead Men Tell No Tales). On Stranger Tides was a financial success, but it was ravaged by critics.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is intended to be something of a reboot of the series. Johnny Depp has said he will continue to play the role of Jack Sparrow as long as it is popular. So this could be only the beginning.
