Metaphors And Symbolism In The Walking Dead

In the clip, Eugene is playing a game called Yars’ Revenge. The game came out in the 1980s and it’s symbolic of what might happen next on The Walking Dead. AMC wants us to know that Rick and Negan’s war is on the rise.

It’s very purposeful that Eugene picked this particular game.

In Yars’ Revenge:

“The player controls an insect-like creature called a Yar who must nibble or shoot through a barrier in order to fire his Zorlon Cannon into the breach. The objective is to destroy the evil Qotile, which exists on the other side of the barrier. The Qotile can shoot at the Yar, even if the barrier is undamaged, by turning into the Swirl. The player is warned before the shot is fired, and he can retreat to a safe distance to dodge the enemy’s energy blast. The Yar can hide from a pursuing destroyer missile within a “neutral zone” in the middle of the screen, but the Yar cannot shoot while in the zone. The Swirl can kill the Yar anywhere, even inside the Neutral Zone.”

What’s important about this description is that it parallels with a future storyline, along with Eugene’s role in the story. Negan’s Saviors are the evil Qotile, who are able to kill as they please, while the good guys need to sit back and develop a plan.

As far as being warned before a shot is fired, Rick does have the walkie so he knows when and how Negan is moving and going about his day-to-day. In addition, he also has Eugene on the inside, and possibly Dwight in the near future.

Also, the game reference about destroying the enemy– the Yars’ Revenge game may touch on Holly’s death in the comic, which may happen to Sasha. The character was so distraught over Abraham’s death that she attacked the Sanctuary.

Hopefully, Sasha will not sacrifice herself like Holly did in the comic book.

Do you think Eugene is going to be good or evil this season?
