Parents at John Handley High School in Winchester, Va received a very disturbing letter from school administrators, letting them know there will be a change in how students are enrolled in Advanced Placement classes. Students with the best grades will no longer be rewarded for their hard work.

Instead, enrollment will be decided by race. The letter, which was sent to conservative radio host Todd Starnes by a parent, broke down the new racial demographics. “Through our collective work, advanced classes such as AP and Honors will have proportional representation,” read the letter. “Proportional representation is 40% White, 35% Hispanic, 12% African American, 10% mixed race.”

It seems Asian students were left completely off the list. Nothing discriminatory about that, right?

The letter went on to suggest that public schools across the nation, continue to see outcomes that are directly affected by race and social class. “American demographic trends indicate that America will be a majority minority nation in the next 25 years,” the letter continued. “Therefore, the new work of American public schools is to develop systems to address disparate outcomes.”

A school district spokesperson denied the new policy had anything to do with race. “All students, regardless of race, must meet academic criteria to enroll in advanced level coursework,” said the spokesperson. “The School Board has not contemplated, nor adopted, any policy or practice that utilizes race in determining which students can or cannot take such courses, or any other courses for that matter.”

If the policy isn’t about race then why are they limiting student enrollment based on race?

There is nothing more dangerous, then turning our public education system into a laboratory for social experimentation. America’s children are not lab rats to be manipulated by ideological demagoguery. This school year, students at this Virginia high school will pay the price for that willful ignorance.

Instead of wasting time, money, and resources on useless policies, what they should be doing is getting back to the three R’s. Handing out participation trophies to everyone who shows up doesn’t produce tomorrow’s leaders.
