Should Actors Decide Our Politics?
We don’t really appreciate when actors get involved in politics, but we do live in a free country. Which means everyone can comment anything on anybody.
De Niro clearly wasn’t a Donald Trump fan or supporter, and that’s why he made this video before the election:
This is far from what we expect from an actor like De Niro. It’s all right to disagree, but this was just too low even for De Niro.
He called Trump “so blatantly stupid,” “a punk,” “a pig,” and “an embarrassment to this country.”
He even said “I’d like to punch him in the face,” and “we have the opportunity to prevent comedy from turning into a tragedy.”
But the elections are over now, and Trump is the president. And of course, because of his previous video De Niro was one of the most wanted talk show guests.

“I can’t [punch Trump] now, he’s the president. And I have to respect that position, although we all know what he…” De Niro trailed off with a snicker—to the delight of the crowd. “You know, I just have to see what he’s gonna do and how he’s really gonna follow through on certain things. As we can see now in a lot of cities, a lot of people are getting very upset and protesting.” – Source.
Protesting and Punching
Kimmel also asked De Niro about the protests:
“I’m sure President Obama is speaking from his own personal experience when he didn’t get a lot of support,” Kimmel said, “ and he’s saying, ‘Hey, we have to … you know, we’re all on the same team.’ But occasionally teammates do punch each other in the face.”
“Maybe he [Obama] will when he sees him,” De Niro replied.
