Back in Season 4, when the Governor brutally beheaded Hershel, Rick saw a real enemy and somewhat cracked under the pressure. Hershel was a father figure to Rick and this death nearly killed him.

After the chaos of battle ended, when Rick was lying helpless and unconscious in a local suburban home, Carl went off on his father. “I don’t need you to protect me anymore,” said Carl. “I can take care of myself.”

“You probably can’t even protect me anyway!” screamed Carl Grimes.
