The Many Metaphors of Sheldon Cooper

2

One of our favorite parts of The Big Bang Theory is the character of Sheldon Cooper.  Through all his quirks, OCD, and narcissism, he is one of the aspects of the show that makes it so intriguing.  Howard, Raj, Leonard, Penny, and Amy all try and explain his behavior in different ways, sometimes sarcastically and others scientifically.  In particular, we find that Sheldon Cooper is compared to things more than any character on the entire show.  Let us take a look at some of our favorites.

The Praying Mantis

For The Big Bang Theory fans, the resemblance between Sheldon and this endangered insect is rather uncanny.  His long limbs and his big eyes hold some resemblance to this peculiar creature.

He is compared to by this creature on more than one occasion.  We find Penny likening Sheldon to a praying mantis in The Cooper-Nowitzki Theorem (S2EP6).  Then we see Amy Farrah Fowler call Sheldon a praying mantis again in The Date Night Variable (S6EP1).  Talk about an insect infestation.

C3PO & R2-D2

This Star Wars robot has a long skinny body with an expressionless face and seemingly infinite knowledge.  As far as we can tell he also seems rather dense and ignorant of sarcasm, much like Sheldon Cooper.

Howard often compared Sheldon to characters in the Star Wars universe.  Notably, Howard first compared Sheldon to C3PO when they met, along with a reference to Pee Wee Herman.  Thus coming up with the nickname of “C3P Wee Herman”.

We also see Sheldon compared to R2-D2 in The Cruciferous Vegetable Amplification (S4EP2) where Sheldon creates a robot presence of himself.  Throughout the episode we see everyone taking hits at Sheldon’s latest project and Howard even threatens to sell Sheldon to Jawas.

Giraffe

A giraffe is tall with long limbs and is sometimes awkward-looking.  It is easy to see how Sheldon might resemble this, though this is a metaphor for most tall people.

Penny refers to Sheldon as a giraffe in The Stag Convergence (S5EP22).

Other Names for Sheldon

It is a running joke throughout the series that Sheldon is not from this planet, indicating he is an alien.

Some nicknames for Sheldon include Shelly, Moonpie, Shelbot, and the skinny weirdo.

What creature or thing do you think Sheldon resembles?
