Indians Are Flipping Out On Kunal Nayyar For Making THIS ‘Racist’ Joke On The TBBT

These days, it seems like everyone is crossing the line in one-way or another. Comedy used to be a format to express truths, but now it seems like everyone has to walk on eggshells. Recently, Kunal Nayyar addressed some racist comments online.

Kunal Nayyar, who stars as Raj Koothrappali on The Big Bang Theory, addressed some comments about a Season 11 episode. While his character was watching a cricket game on television, some felt the joke that was made was too harsh towards foreigners.

The comment was about three cricket bowlers from India, named Ravichandran Ashwin, Hardik Pandya, and Bhuvaneshwar Kumar.

Raj Koothrappali said, “That’s Ravichandran Ashwin. He’s amazing! He makes Hardik Pandya look like Bhuvaneshwar Kumar!” While this would appear to be a joke meant to highlight the players’ abilities, it was actually about their names.

Then, Howard Wolowtiz responded, “Whoa whoa whoa whoa! Save some syllables for the rest of us!” Clearly, the humor was only meant as a joke, but many fans were offended and expressed their opinions on Twitter and other social media sites.

“It just comes off as lazy writing. Maybe a little stereotypical and maybe a little racist as well,” said Twitter user Sugandh Shashwat.

Racist, Lazy Writing, Or Nonsense?

Regardless, Kunal Nayyar decided to toss his hat into the ring. While another user added, “Nothing racist about it…just lazy writing…considering Kunal spoke the lines, doesn’t seem like he knows much about cricket either.”

Actor Kunal Nayyar chimed in, “I’m confused. How is this lazy writing? And how is this stereotypical? Have you watched the whole scene? I wrote most of it. And I’m a cricket fanatic.” The actor added, “Also, how is this racist?”

Ultimately, it looks like Kunal Nayyar addressed these comments in the best way possible. As a result, one user wrote back that they rewatched the scene and no longer saw it as racist or lazy.

With Kunal Nayyar writing scenes for Raj Koothrappali, he will hopefully write a few more love scenes in for the character. So far, he’s the only main character left that hasn’t found someone to marry.

Do you think we’ll see Raj Koothrappali get married anytime soon?
