duck-dynastyHave you ever wondered about the parenting styles of famous reality tv stars like Willie and Korie Robertson? The kids have to be well adjusted to some degree, right? I can think of some kids I wouldn’t want to see their behavior televised.

After receiving tons of fan letters asking Korie Robertson, of Duck Dynasty, how she managed to raise good kids, she has answered them. With the help of her mother Chris Howard, and husband, Willie Robertson, Korie has written a book on parenting. Her book, Strong and Kind: And Other Important Character Traits Your Child Needs to Succeed, is a much needed breath of fresh air amid all of the helicopter parenting styles.

This is not Robertson’s first book. She is a New York Times’ Bestselling Author.

According to this Duck Dynasty matriarch, parents are the source of the traits you want to instill into your children.

When I first read the title, it occurred to me that “Strong and Kind” are certainly traits that every parent should have as well as their children.

“After being a parent for twenty years, I have come to believe that the most important thing for parents to decide-more important than bottle or breastfeeding, more important than co-sleeping or sleep training, and even more important than whether to put your child in day care or become a stay-at-home parent – is what values are important to your family and how you will go about instilling those values in your children,” Korie Robertson,

There are no perfect parents, and no matter how good of a parent you are, you will not produce a perfect child. However, as Korie points out,

“It isn’t always easy, but raising kids with good character is possible.”

Korie’s approach is straightforward and practical. Strong and Kind identifies the character traits you are hoping to instill in your family. Then she gives you everything you need to put them in place.

Coming from the Robertson family, you might think that it is completely bible based. You wouldn’t be far off. The traits Korie believes all children need include, self-control, honesty, compassion, patience, joyfulness, loyalty and humility.

The thesis of her book, and parenting style is that if you model these traits with “confidence, creativity, unity, and in truth and love” you have the best chance of your kids catching on.

But the most important thing you can do, says Robertson, is hand them over to God in prayer. After all He loves them more than we do.
