It seems The Big Bang Theory fans can be found all over the world. A few scientists in Brazil took their fandom a bit further than most when they named their scientific discovery after Sheldon Cooper’s catchphrase.

Sheldon Cooper is known for his catchphrase “Bazinga!” The physicist utters the phrase any time he is pranking someone or being clever on The Big Bang Theory. The phrase quickly caught on amidst fans, and over time “Bazinga” has become synonymous with TBBT. Utter the word and people will immediately know you’re a TBBT superfan.
One group of scientists wanted all of his colleagues to know about his devotion to the show- so they named their scientific discovery after the word. A Biologist from Brazil named Andre Nemesio named a species of Orchard bee the “Euglossa Bazinga.” The scientist said the name is appropriate because the species often fools scientists by being incredibly similar to other species.

Nemesio said he wanted to name the bee in “honor of the clever, funny, nerd character Sheldon Cooper.” The bee is bright blue, with bits of green on the tail.
Steve Molaro, showrunner at TBBT, said, “Sheldon would be honored to know that Euglossa bazinga was inspired by him. In fact, after “mothra” and griffins, bees are his third-favorite flying creatures.”
You learn something new about Sheldon Cooper every day. Steve also added that CBS is, “always extremely flattered when the science community embraces our show.”

We think Sheldon would be more than honored- he’d probably brag about the named species to everyone who would listen- and even those who wouldn’t. Amy would probably have to tell him to stop talking about it- kind of like when Bernadette had to tell Howard to stop talking about space.
