Duck Dynasty has been called out on “political correctness” in the past.

First off, Phil got suspended for stating his beliefs on homosexuality. But it gets much deeper.

“Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there,” Phil told GQ magazine in 2013 after the interviewer asked what he considered sinful behavior. “Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men.”

Then Phil went on to paraphrase the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. He was simply re-stating the beliefs held in the Bible.

“Don’t be deceived,” he said. “Neither the adulterers, the idolaters, the male prostitutes, the homosexual offenders, the greedy, the drunkards, the slanderers, the swindlers — they won’t inherit the kingdom of God. Don’t deceive yourself. It’s not right.”

This caused mass outcry.

In response to that, a representative from GLAAD (formerly the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) questioned Phil’s faith.

“Phil and his family claim to be Christian, but Phil’s lies about an entire community fly in the face of what true Christians believe,” said GLAAD rep Wilson Cruz. “He clearly knows nothing about gay people or the majority of Louisianans — and Americans — who support legal recognition for loving and committed gay and lesbian couples.”

As we now know, shortly after these comments, A&E announced that Phil would be taking a “hiatus” from the show, saying, “His personal views in no way reflect those of A&E Networks.”

If you didn’t know the backstory before hearing that Phil was kicked off Duck Dynasty, you’d be shocked.

It’s a wholesome show about a nice Southern family who hunts ducks. They don’t cuss (even though A&E made it seem like they did with “fake bleeps”). They don’t show or say anything that’s above a G rating.

And in the GQ interview, Phil (as he always does) had to drive home his Jesus point.

“So you and your woman: Are y’all Bible people?” Phil asked the interviewer.

“Not really, I’m sorry to say,” the interviewer said.

“If you simply put your faith in Jesus coming down in flesh, through a human being, God becoming flesh living on the earth, dying on the cross for the sins of the world, being buried, and being raised from the dead — yours and mine and everybody else’s problems will be solved,” Phil said. “And the next time we see you, we will say: ‘You are now a brother. Our brother.’ So then we look at you totally different then. See what I’m saying?”

Leave it up to Phil to mention Jesus. It seems like every interview or public conversation he’s in, the Messiah shows up.
