Are large candy corporations making pet’s food?!
Well, that’s right. As with virtually every other product on the face of the Earth – dogs’ foods are created by giant corporations (not necessarily evil, though). If you’re new to dogs and wondering what are the big names you can rely on for your pets meals, here are the three biggest companies out there.
Yep, the chocolate bar company named after the Roman god of war (makes perfect sense, doesn’t it?) is a dominant player in the market of pets’ foods. Just to throw some of the names out there – Pedigree, Royal Canine, Chappi, Cesar. All of these brands are owned by Mars and provide food for millions of cats and dogs daily. The company’s revenue was estimated to be around 17 billion dollars. This is enough to maintain a small European country budget. Including expenses on dog’s food.
Another company mainly known for bringing sweet tasty treats is a global supplier of dogs’ food. Among the main brands for Nestle in this domain are Bakers, Purina, Winalot, Bonio. Nestle boasts an annual revenue of 12 billion dollars, which might not be enough to keep a European country fully operational, but definitely a mind-blowing number for a single company.
Finally, someone who doesn’t specialize in candy, right? Quite the opposite, actually. Colgate is famous for delivering toothpaste that actively combats the results of chocolate and candy consumption. And they also do produce dogs’ foods. Colgate-Palmolive boasts an the annual revenue in the region of 16 billion US dollars. They deliver food for your pets under such brands as Hills Science Plan and Hills Prescription Diets.
A big question for new dog owners is what kind of food to buy for their pets…
Should this be a well-known global company with a proven track record? Or is it just silly – to be ‘bullied’ into buying from these big companies? Is buying fresh natural food for your dog from a local vendor is a better way to go? Unfortunately, there is no easy way to answer this question. What we can say for certain, is that the three big dog food retailers really know what they’re doing.
Maybe your dog is not going to be getting the best kinds of foods out there, but you also minimize any chance of getting this choice horribly wrong (until you do a lot more research!). And no dog owner wants to feed their dog some awful stuff, however, organic or local it might be. Most and foremost try different things in small quantities and look at how your pet reacts to these different foods. This way, sooner or later you will undoubtedly find the perfect fit for your four-legged friend.
Most dogs are not very picky when it comes to what they eat (you know what we’re talking about here), so you really have to take the hints and make a good choice. After all, food ration is the basis for the dog’s well-being and overall health. Try to make the right choice.
