Not long ago, there was talk of Sacha Baron Cohen (Bruno, Borat) starring in a movie about the band, Queen. Fans were thrilled to hear the news, but soon after the announcement, the sizzle turned out to be smoke.
In 1991, Freddie Mercury died after being diagnosed with AIDS and there was talk about putting his story on the big screen ever since. Based on his huge personality and demanding presence on stage, he’s quite the onscreen character for an actor.
There are still occasionally articles online, but nothing certain for a new movie. At least, nothing until now.
Actor Sacha Baron Cohen Talks Freddie Mercury
When Cohen started talking about the role, it felt like a high profile actor could finally make the movie happen. But, like the rumored Ramones movie from Martin Scorsese, it just didn’t work out.
On Howard Stern, Cohen said he wanted to really dive into the role, but the band wanted to keep it clean in a sense. “There are amazing stories about Freddie Mercury,” said Cohen about the man’s sex life.
“The guy was wild. He was living an extreme lifestyle,” said the actor.
Queen Movie Fell Apart Due To Queen, But…
“There are stories about little people, with plates of cocaine on their heads,” said the actor about Mercury. “You’ve got to remember – and I understand it – they are a band and they want to protect their legacy as a band.”
According to the actor, the surviving band members wanted for Freddie’s death to be in the middle of the movie. Then, it could be about the band after his death. In reality, of course, fans want to see Freddie Mercury more than life after Freddie.
“I said, not one person is going to want to see a movie where the lead character dies from AIDS and then you carry on,” said Cohen. But, despite this failed attempt, Bryan Singer (The Usual Suspects) is working with Rami Malek (Mr. Robot) on a film.
The movie is called Bohemian Rhapsody where Malek will star as Mercury. The release date is listed as Christmas Day, 2018.
