Pokémon might look like a very simple, even childish game to most people.  But if you’ve even tried to understand more of what makes a Pokémon game, you’d know that there are a ton of hidden stats and complex formulas behind each move you make in a Pokémon battle.

Pokemon Go Appraisal FormulaYou’re basically disqualified from calling yourself a Pokémon master if you haven’t memorized this

Pokémon Stats

In the main Pokémon games, each Pokémon has a plethora of stats, some very visible, like nature, gender, hp, attack and defense.  Ad some hidden ones like EV (kind of visible by gen 6), PV, shininess, friendship and our topic of the day, IVs or Individual values.

IVs are hidden stats that give bonuses to their respective stats depending on how high they are. IVs aren’t really that important to common players but they’re very important to competitive battlers.  So much so that only entering perfect Pokémon (Pokémon with the maximum number of IVs in all stats) is a common practice in the competitive scene. And people get those Pokémon by breeding their Pokémon and using particular items with special methods to get their 6 perfect IV Pokémon.

Pokémon GO Appraisal System

Pokémon GO introduced an update that lets people have a fast and easy way to check their caught Pokémon’s IVs. Pokémon GO’s stats are much simpler than the main games. In Pokémon GO your Pokémon stats are only HP, attack and defense, no specials and no speed. The appraisal system for Pokémon Go let’s you ask your team leader (Blanche, Spark or Candela) to judge your Pokémon. And judge your Pokémon they will, as they will comment on:

  1. How good (or bad) your Pokémon’s overall stats are
  2. What’s their best stat and how high it is
  3. What’s their size and weight focusing on being exceptional: exceptionally large/small and exceptionally light/heavy.

The dialogue of the leaders differ from one another but you can generally get a feel on how high your Pokémon’s IVs are.

Here’s a table showing the dialogues from each team for the Overall Stats:
