“It’s something that I’ve gotten used to,” said Robert Kirkman about Carl Grimes in the comic versus the television show. “It’s something that happens from time to time on the show.”
Other obvious examples include Daryl Dixon, who isn’t in the comic book, as well as Carol, who died much earlier. But the deal of Carl Grimes is likely the biggest change we’ve ever seen from the comic book.
“Really, if anything, it’s something that makes me more excited,” he added.
The Walking Dead Without Carl Grimes
“Anytime that that path is not set, where you can’t look at a comic book series and go, ‘Oh, I know exactly what is going to happen,’ makes it more exciting,” said Robert Kirkman on an episode of Talking Dead.
“Dealing with those unknowns, when we’re in the writer’s room and we’re working on Season 9, all of those changes snowball out from that make for a better show,” said the creator.
Hopefully, he’s right. But some fans are not so sure the show can return.
What’s Next On The Walking Dead?
In the comic book, the next major storyline revolves around Carl Grimes. In the past, there have been storylines that switched up characters. But it’s different with Carl. His storyline with the Whisperers isn’t really available to everyone else.
Kirkman’s comic highlights a love story between Carl and the Alpha leader’s daughter. Some fans think that Daryl Dixon or maybe even Enid can take over this role but that doesn’t quite feel right. However, the comic creator and series executive producer has hinted that the writers will figure it out. For now, it’s unclear if the Whisperers storyline will happen during the next six episodes or wait until the next season.
In addition to Carl’s death, there has also been a new Showrunner named Angela Kang promoted on the show. Hopefully, her character-driven stories will shape the story into something great and worthy of the gigantic fanbase.
