“When I first met him, Jesus said that my world was going to get a whole lot bigger,” began Rick Grimes. “We found that world. We found each other. That bigger world is ours, by right,” added the leader and spokesman.

“We’ve come together for it. All of us. It’s that much more true. It’s ours, by right,” he said again. Aside from some prep scenes, the bulk of the Season 8 premiere focuses on Rick’s Braveheart-like war speech.

Rick Grimes focuses on “We” in the speech, but he alone promises to kill Negan.

Since the very beginning, Rick Grimes has promised to kill Negan. He made this promise in the very beginning when Negan had everyone on their knees. He said it again after Negan murdered Abraham and Glenn.

For a moment, Rick lost his way. Season 7 showed the first time we’ve seen Rick weak and possibly even afraid. He did his best to follow Negan’s rules, but the regime simply had too many rules for Rick.

Finally, he decided to return to his promise. On his knees once more, he told Negan he was going to kill him, whether or not he killed his son.

Later in the speech, he tells everyone that only one man needs to die. Rick tells the Hilltoppers, Alexandria, and the Kingdom that their focus will be on Negan. Whoever gets in their way, however, will also need to die.

The group gathers the troops and drives vehicles towards the Sanctuary. They kill all of the lookouts with rogue troops. Daryl, Morgan, and Rick take out the sentinels thanks to a message from Dwight.

Once they get to the gate, Rick tells Negan and his men that only Negan has to die. Rick promises that Dwight, Simon, and the other Lieutenants can live. Negan tries to play the high card by saying he won’t let his people die over a pissing contest.

Regardless, we see the fear in his men. Gavin even tries to call a “Time Out” when things start to get heated. When an explosion goes off in the background, the Saviors begin to realize they’re going to die.

Do you think Rick Grimes will ever actually kill Negan?
