Ryan Holiday’s book The Obstacle Is The Way is a book about the ancient philosophy of stoicism. As a “happy accident,” the book recently took the NFL world by storm after Super Bowl champion coach, Bell Belichick, read and prescribed it.

In the book, there is the story about a “rock in the road” that blocks a common path of travel for the villagers. Each of the villagers who came upon the rock tried and failed to move the obstacle.

Ironically, Rick Grimes told this same story to the king in the midseason premier…

In the midseason premiere of The Walking Dead, it’s clear that Rick Grimes isn’t getting very far trying to convince the King to prepare for battle. Near the end of his conversation with the King, Rick tells a story his mother told him.

“There was a road to a Kingdom,” said Rick Grimes, “…and there was a rock in the road. People would just avoid it.” Rick then described a girl’s family wagon. The rock destroyed the wheel of their wagon and their brewed goods to sell were destroyed.

The girl cried, “but she wondered why it was still there—for it to hurt someone else. So she dug at that rock with her hands until they bled. Used everything she had to pull it out… And then, when she was going to fill it up, she saw something in it.”

Rick then said, “It was a bag of gold.” The King put that rock in the road.

In Rick’s version of the story, the king was providing a reward for those willing to put in the work. “They deserved to have their life changed for the better, forever,” confirmed Rick Grimes.

Rick’s “rock in the road,” of course, is Negan and the Saviors. In the stoic version of the story, “The obstacle in the path becomes the path. Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition.”

While Rick’s words didn’t fully motivate the king, it did tell his purpose for moving forward. In addition, defeating Negan who is the obstacle, is the way to a new life.

Do you think Rick Grimes will change the King’s mind before the battle begins?
