Willingness To Sacrifice Yourself

The Walking Dead | Photo Credit AMC At the end of The Walking Dead finale, Maggie reveals her thoughts on everything that happened and how that relates back to Glenn. At the moment she said, “To sacrifice for each other,” it’s clear that Negan was necessary for our heroes.

Her real point here is that Glenn was the sacrifice to save the others. When the episode then shows her sitting next to Sasha on the fallen tree (which resembles a scene from Out of Africa), it’s also true that Sasha sacrificed herself.

In a way, this is also true of Abraham, Benjamin, and even Richard.

On the most obvious level, Negan’s actions changed, altered, and improved Rick’s leadership. But they also made Maggie a leader. She was always strong-willed, but now she’s officially leading everyone to the future.

Maggie is the one thinking about the blueberry plants that last forty years and has a baby growing inside of her. Rick also fights for the future, but he often seems more focused on vengeance than helping the next generation of survivors.

Maggie will unite the past with the future.

Maggie Leads With True Respect

In the final moments of the episode, she essentially lists every emotion, but the important thing is that they are all willing to fight for one another. This is the opposite of Negan’s Saviors, who essentially only fight for Negan.

Negan believes he rules with respect, but he only rules with fear. Maggie, and usually Rick, will both lead with respect because they are willing to live on the battlefield and fight for the future.

“Glenn made the decision, Rick. I was just following his lead,” Maggie concluded. Essentially, while Maggie literally has Baby Rhee inside of her, she also has Hershel and Glenn helping her make decisions.

Negan changed everything, but these characters are growing from the wreckage.

Do you think Maggie has what it takes to take down Negan?
