What Does “Old Man Rick” Mean?
To say the least, there’s a lot going on in the Season 8 trailer for The Walking Dead’s newest season. There are war-time preparations, new characters, explosions, and more in the short Comic Con trailer, but one thing really stood out.
At the end of the trailer, there’s a moment where we see Rick Grimes laying in a hospital bed and there’s also a shot of a cane that is in the same room. This teaser made many fans believe Rick’s dream scenario was going to finally play out.
Some fans believe that the entire show is simply a dream in Rick’s mind.
Scott Gimple Address Rick’s New Look
Robert Kirkman has said that there’s no way the series is going to end as a dream. Nevertheless, that doesn’t explain “Old Man Rick” from the trailer. The showrunner Scott Gimple has said that it also won’t be addressed in the premiere.
“We will not get the definitive answer as to what that’s about in the premiere,” concluded the showrunner. “This season is very much about them fighting back. Fighting can be scary, and there’s uncertainty to it, but in and of itself, it is a hopeful act,” said Gimple.
So what’s with Old Man Rick?
Time Jump Comes In Season 8 TWD
In the comic, there’s an aftermath to the war with Negan. Essentially, there’s a major time jump in the comic to move forward to the latest action. Kirkman decided to skip over the peacetime and focus on the next war.
Based on the cane and the comic storyline, it’s possible that Rick Grimes will get seriously injured in the next season. It’s also possible that the time jump could push them way into the future.
In the comic, we miss things like the birth of Baby Rhee, but it explained after the fact. It’s hard to believe that AMC would miss this, so they may play with the time jump and show a little more on television.
