The charges were announced by Acting Assistant Attorney General Mary B. McCord for National Security, U.S. Attorney Channing D. “Claiborne began working as an Office Management Specialist for the Department of State in 1999. She has served overseas at a number of posts, including embassies and consulates in Baghdad, Iraq, Khartoum, Sudan, and Beijing and Shanghai, China.”

The complaint also alleges that Claiborne met with two intelligence officials from the People’s Republic of China, which she failed to disclose, even though she and her family received elaborate and expensive gifts over a five-year period. Those gifts included “cash wired to Claiborne’s USAA account, an Apple iPhone and laptop computer, international travel and vacations, tuition at a Chinese fashion school, and a fully furnished apartment. She faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted of the charges.
