3Some have called Phil Robertson a bigot, but no one can — on any grounds — call him a racist. He showed that by opening his arms to Jep’s son.

One way he’s made that clear is by denouncing the Confederate flag, which many people see as a symbol of racism, slavery, and general hatred toward those not like yourself.

“I have never owned a Confederate flag,” he said. “This is what upsets me — ‘Redneck’ is a term of endearment around here. And attaching that to a Confederate flag is offensive to me . . . That Confederate flag is not what we stand for.’”

Another big way he made it clear that humans are humans despite the color of their skin is how he welcomed his grandson Gus, Jep’s son.

You see, Gus happens to be African-American.

Some people might say Phil was a racist because of his comments to GQ.

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once,” he said.

But he later clarified his statement with a loving gesture.

“We don’t look at people like black, white and brown,” he said. “We’re all members of the human race.”

And when Jep and Jessica brought Gus home, Phil celebrated alongside them.
