No One Is Safe On The Walking Dead

For Walking Dead fans, it’s never safe. In issue 167, the comics killed off a huge fan-favorite who has been with the franchise since the beginning. No one is safe during the zombie apocalypse.

Robert Kirkman took out Rick’s long-time girlfriend and Carl’s adoptive mother, Andrea. She was bitten, two issues ago while trying to save Eugene from a herd.

She saved Alexandria, but it costs her life.

She showed Rick the bite mark on her neck when she returned and he collapsed.

Issue 167 revealed Andrea’s live funeral, where each character came to her to say their final goodbye. Right before the issue came to a close, a sad Rick Grimes drove a knife into her head to stop the reanimation process.

Like any tragedy on The Walking Dead, this will certainly lead to character growth for Carl and Rick, but it is terribly sad. Beyond the pages of the comic, it could also mean that Michonne is the next to die on the series.

Michonne has taken Andrea’s storyline when she fell for Rick Grimes.

“I plotted this issue out during a plane ride a few months ago,” said Robert Kirkman. “I plot my stories down with a pencil and paper, and there I was in my seat, blocking out scenes and writing dialogue notes, surrounded by strangers who probably thought I was jotting down a shopping list.”

“As I was writing some of the moments from this issue, I started crying. I found myself glancing around, wiping my eyes, hoping no one would notice. I’ve been living with this death for months now… and I don’t like it,” he concluded.

Kirkman went on to say that he is in control of the story so he could have changed his mind, but in a way, he’s also not in control. Kirkman allows for his characters to follow their own storylines.

“Andrea is dead and the story moves on,” he said. “I don’t know why this had to happen… but I know it did. I know this is another important turning point in the life of this series. I know Andrea’s death will mean something, that it will resonate in the stories moving forward for years to come. But I still don’t like it. It still upsets me. I loved Andrea and I will truly miss her.”

Unfortunately, this means Michonne could die next.
