Any Sci-fi geek or “Trekie” knows who William Shatner is. While we’re on the subject, on the whole Star Wars vs. Star Trek debate, I’m a Trekie. Sorry, if I disappointed some readers out there! I respect the Star Wars franchise though. But the Next Generation was so good! I’m still a baby Trekie. Live long and prosper!
Anyway, Shatner is a stable at a lot of science fiction conventions to this day and his fans really love him. So, you think he would have loved to make a cameo on one of America’s most beloved geeky television shows.
Dozens of sci-fi and Hollywood icons have dropped by the series to cater toward its geek-friendly audience. Star Trek icon William Shatner apparently felt it beneath him, however, wanting writers to “find something that’s better” than their original pitch.
Shatner revealed to Digital Spy that The Big Bang Theory had approached him to cameo as himself in a prior season, though his response may admittedly have put them off a second attempt. James T. Kirk apparently took issue with playing an “oblique” version of himself, and the series hasn’t offered a second attempt:
I’ve had several conversations with the creators, and what they wanted me to do, didn’t seem to be exactly right, so I said ‘find something that’s better’. They may have taken umbrage at that, I’m not sure. […]
They wanted me to play myself a little obliquely, and they said it would work out, but I needed more assurance on that.
Shatner’s own Star Trek co-stars the late great Leonard Nimoy and George Takei have participated in the series (Nimoy only provided voiceover), while The Next Generation stars Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton and Wil Wheaton have also appeared as themselves. As well as James Earl Jones, a.k.a. Darth Vader. Just for you Star Wars fans out there!
FYI: That episode was hilarious. Maybe they should do a switch in roles with Shatner too. They can make the captain annoy Sheldon instead of the other way around. There is really a lot they can do with a Shatner scenario.

The Big Bang Theory has yet to secure any deals beyond the current tenth season, but will Shatner reconcile with the writers before the CBS series comes to an end? If no deal is struck soon, Shatner will be out of time. Of course, we don’t want the show to end any time soon either. We hope they will come to some sort of agreement. It would be hilarious to see Sheldon annoy Shatner. Let’s just hope he doesn’t try to grow his own William Shatner. Though, I have to admit, I would love to see that.
