House Oversight Committee

Source Credit: The Political Cult South Carolina Congressman, Trey Gowdy, is tough and tenacious. Gowdy, who made a name for himself when he was Chairman of House Select Committee on Benghazi, is not afraid of a challenge. He also never shies away from speaking his mind. In fact, Gowdy has made headlines on several recent occasions, taking on Comey, Democrats and the liberal media.

Now, “the Bulldog” has been appointed to his most powerful position yet as head of the House Oversight Committee. The committee is responsible for overseeing the White House and Trump administration. However, the better news is that the president will finally have a powerful ally. Gowdy will take over the position from Utah Rep. Jason Chaffetz, who is leaving Congress on June 30th.

House Speaker Paul Ryan applauded Gowdy’s appointment in a statement Thursday. “Trey Gowdy possesses the experience and deep commitment to transparency and accountability necessary to be the House’s next Oversight chairman. Gowdy’s appointment to the committee will likely help the somewhat strained relationship between President Trump and the House Freedom Caucus. Tensions greatly increased between them after the caucus failed to approve the president’s health care bill back in March. Top-ranking Democrat on the committee, Elijah Cummings, also offered Gowdy congratulations.

“I look forward to working with him in a constructive and bipartisan manner on an agenda that serves the interests of the American people,” Cummings said in a statement. “He is our Chairman, and we pledge to support his efforts whenever we can.” Unfortunately, Cummings has publicly criticized President Trump which means his relationship with Gowdy may be more adversarial than he is letting on.

Gowdy reportedly did not apply for the position, but nonetheless, he is excited about the opportunity. “I am grateful to the Steering Committee and the Conference as a whole for this opportunity to serve,” Gowdy said in a statement. “I look forward to working alongside the other Committee members, as well as any member of Congress, as we discharge the jurisdiction assigned to us.”
