Stevie Nicks’ Addiction To Prescription Pills Began When the Coke Addiction Ended

In the late eighties Stevie Nicks’ addiction pushed her into checking in at the Betty Ford Clinic. Following her release the vocalist felt great. Nicks spent a full year away from coke after rehab happy and writing music. Nicks discussed that special year during an interview with  Rolling Stone in 2014, saying, “in fact, The Other Side of the Mirror is probably my favorite album. Those songs were written right before the Klonopin kicked in. ‘In the shadow of the castle walls’ — that song was very important to me. I was lucky those songs were written when they were, before that nasty tranquilizer. It was a really intense record. People don’t talk about that record much, but it was different from all the others. It was a moment in time. In 1986 I had gotten away from the cocaine, spending a year writing those songs. I was drug-free and I was happy.”

Unfortunately, Stevie Nicks’ addiction impacted friends and family so deeply they were terrified she would relapse. Although she felt confident her days with cocaine were over, the rest of the people in her world were not so sure. Nicks discusses that world suggesting she see a psychiatrist during in an interview with The Telegraph in 2007.

“Your world? ‘The powers that be, the people around me. The best thing in the eyes of everybody else was for me to go see a shrink. I really didn’t want to go. But I finally just said all right in order to get all of you off my back.”

Stevie Nicks’ Addiction To Prescription Pills Written By Dr. Groupie

The worst thing for the treatment of addiction to a mind altering substance is another mind altering substance. Prescription tranquilizers a.k.a. anxiety medication, benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Ativan, Kolonopin) are deadly. These are the family of drugs that Stevie Nicks’ addiction to prescription pills belong.

The doctor told her “in order to keep you off cocaine we should put you on the drug that we’re using a lot these days called Klonopin. Stupidly, I said, “All right.” And the next eight years of my life were destroyed,” writes CCHR

Nicks goes on to say “the next six years were terrible. Looking back on it, I think this therapist was basically a groupie. He loved hearing stories of rock and roll and he started upping my dose. He watched me go from a beautiful, 125-pound, newly sober woman who had the world at her feet to a 170-pound woman who had the lights go out in her eyes.”

Stevie Nicks’ addiction to prescription pills snatched eight years of her life until the fog lifted enough for her to see the light.

“Finally, in 1993, I’d had enough. Take me to a hospital. I went in for 47 days, and it made Betty Ford look like a cakewalk. My hair turned gray and my skin molted. I could hardly walk. You can detox off heroin in 12 days. Coke is just a mental detox. But tranquilizers—they are dangerous. I was terrified to leave, and I came away knowing that that would never happen to me again.”

Stevie Nicks says in Rolling Stone “forty-seven days in rehab to get off Klonopin was way more horrific than 30 days to get off coke.”

Stevie Nicks’ addiction to prescription pills is now over.  The infamous female vocalist is beginning to launch her 24 Karat Gold Tour clean and sober. However, she hopes that her story about prescription tranquilizers will shed light on a serious problem. Those drugs are very dangerous, do not be fooled. Stevie Nicks’ story is one of survival and hope for fans as well as those struggling with substance abuse.
