Do you know if your state hosts one of the top no-kill rescue shelters in the U.S.?

An estimated 14,000 animal shelters and pet rescue groups in the U.S. take in nearly 8 million animals each year. Very few of which are rated as top no-kill rescue shelters. The majority of those “rescued” are put to death before finding a forever home.

Utah’s – Best Friends: Save Them All

Best Friends heart and soul is the Sanctuary, where, about 1,600 animals are moving from a life on the streets to a life filled with hope. Each one, receiving the medical help they need and getting love and acceptance to help them overcome the tragedies and pitfalls of an abandoned life. While dogs, and cats, search for their forever homes, they wake every morning to a scenic, healing environment among caring humans and fellow furry friends.

“Best Friends owns nearly 3,700 acres, and we lease another 17,000 acres of state and federal land. Nearly 30,000 people visit every year to meet the animals and tour what has become the nation’s largest no-kill sanctuary for companion animals. Learn more about the Sanctuary.”

Puppy Mills: Best Friends is doing a lot to combat puppy mills, one of the major contributors to animal homelessness. Using public awareness campaigns, legislative work, and encouraging adoption rather than purchasing pets, Best Friends is putting their best paw forward to end the abusive nature of Puppy Mills.

Texas’ – Austin Pets Alive! Helping People Help Pets

Austin Pets Alive! helped save over 2,500 animals from Hurricane Harvey’s direct path and they aren’t stopping anytime soon!

Austin Pets Alive! started rescuing animals in 2008. At that time, the rich resources of Austin were put to use in birth-prevention, but not so much into the live program. They discovered many of the dogs they lost could be prevented with innovative programs such as the Parvo Puppy ICU.

Through these and other programs, Austin Pets Alive! has saved over 25,000 dogs and cats since 2008. “The success of our programs and the excellent work of other local animal welfare organizations has led Austin to save more than 90% of animals since 2011.”
