1. The Prayer Debate

At the start of the Duck Dynasty series, A&E producers weren’t sure how audiences would respond to the family’s deep Christian beliefs.  The episodes would conclude with a family meal and prayer.  More often than not, Phil Robertson would deliver this prayer from the head of the table.  He always ended his thoughts with, “In Jesus name, Amen.”  Many were offended by this and thought a TV show should be more inclusive with their prayer.  The Robertsons refused to eliminate “In Jesus name,” and found that many fans stood behind them on the decision.

Thoughts on the Scandal

In an interview with Sports Spectrum Magazine Phil spoke of the Jesus issue.  Phil referred to the show’s producers when he said, “They would just have me saying, thank you, Lord, for the food.  Thank you for loving us, amen.” He goes on, “So I said, Why would you cut out in Jesus’ name?”  When told he may offend others Phil responded, “I said let’s see now…What year is it?…2012 AD…The year of our Lord.  I said you Hollywood cats; you’re counting your time with Jesus just like I am.”

2. The Fake Bleeps

Phil also recounted how editors would bleep over the Duck Dynasty member’s speech when no profanities had been uttered.  The crew wanted the family to appear to be cursing even when they weren’t.  Phil responded, “A fake bleep…If you want that you can get all of that you want.  Just turn the station…If we’re not using profanity why make it look like we’re using profanity.”  Phil did not believe his audience would want to hear those types of words.

3. The Bathroom Scandal

Most recently Controversial Phil Robertson has caused more scandal by weighing in on North Carolina bathroom laws.  The 2016 laws have come under fire for being discriminatory against Transgender people who wish to use the bathroom of the gender they identify.  Phil said, “Men should use the men’s bathroom, and women should use the women’s bathroom,” and went on, “Just because a man may ‘feel’ like a woman doesn’t mean he should be able to share a bathroom with my daughter, or yours. That used to be called common sense. Now it’s called bigoted.”

Many fans and critics took to Twitter and other social media platforms to speak out against Phil’s statements.  After the 2014 GQ scandal, Robertson was used to his values being judged.  He wrote, “The Judeo-Christian values that led America to greatness are under full assault by the mob mentality of political correctness, and we’re slowly losing our soul.”

Time will tell if Controversial Phil Robertson Continues to make a splash in mainstream media.
