The Walking Dead has just begun production on Season 8 of the AMC series. Showrunner Scott Gimple has recently spoken with Entertainment Weekly about the new season and what fans can expect.

“We knew we wanted to mix it up in eight, and we knew what eight was going to be and how that would dictate a very different kind of structure,” said the showrunner, who was subtly referring to the episodes like “Swear” that were slow in Season 7.

Season 7 was the only time the show received major complaints from fans.

More Of Your Favorite Characters, Every Episode

Season 7 was essentially an experiment for the show that went south on a handful of episodes where the writers explored side characters but left main characters in the dust. Season 8 should get back to basics, which means more Daryl, more Rick.

The major critiques for Season 7 was that the show was more like Lost than Game of Thrones. On HBO’s hit show, they divide up the characters very well so audiences can see fan favorites every single episode.

Fox’s Lost also hit harsh ratings when they sidelined main characters.

Mixing Up Season 8 For Fans

Scott Gimple said he knew they wanted to “mix-up” Season 8, which means an entirely new structure for the show. More than likely, we’ll see a little bit of each of the fan favorites every episode.

If you picture the episode in Season 7 when Benjamin sneaks up on Carol, but we only see Carol for that one scene, that could be what Season 8 is going to look like, but it’ll obviously be a little more action-packed.

Negan’s War is about to begin and everyone is preparing for battle. Rick is likely prepping his troops to fight, while the Saviors will also be preparing for battle back at the Sanctuary.

With Gregory’s absence, Maggie will lead Hilltop and the King will get the Kingdom ready to fight.
