Over the weekend, the Washington Post published a story about President Thomas Jefferson’s tradition of celebrating Ramadan in the White House over 200 years ago. Wrong.

Photo credit: News Leader The story was completely inaccurate, as pointed out by Breitbart. In fact, only three out 45 presidents have held a Ramadan celebration-Clinton, Bush, and Obama.

Hardly the Founding Fathers, right? Nevertheless, the media criticized President Trump for not having the traditional celebration. For the first time in two decades, Ramadan was acknowledged only via a short statement from President Trump and First Lady, Melania. Their statement was released to the public late Saturday afternoon.

Nevertheless, the media criticized President Trump for not having the traditional celebration. For the first time in two decades, Ramadan was acknowledged only via a short statement from President Trump and First Lady, Melania. Their statement was released to the public late Saturday afternoon.

“Muslims in the United States joined those around the world during the holy month of Ramadan to focus on acts of faith and charity,” the statement read. “Now, as they commemorate Eid with family and friends, they carry on the tradition of helping neighbors and breaking bread with people from all walks of life. During this holiday, we are reminded of the importance of mercy, compassion, and goodwill. With Muslims around the world, the United States renews our commitment to honor these values. Eid Mubarak.”

In addition, at the beginning of May Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, declined to hold a Ramadan reception at the State Department. Something the last three administrations have done in the past. Tillerson also released a short statement on Saturday to commemorate the event:

“This holiday marks the culmination of Ramadan, a month in which many experience meaning and inspiration in acts of fasting, prayer, and charity. “This day offers an opportunity to reflect on our shared commitment to building peaceful and prosperous communities. Eid Mubarak.”

President Trump and Secretary Tillerson’s statements were far more brief than those of former President, Barack Obama, who gave a lengthy speech to commemorate Ramadan festivities in 2016. However, President Trump’s decision not to celebrate will likely come as no surprise to those who voted for him.

This year has been one of the deadliest Ramadan months in recent history earning the holy month the unfavorable nickname “Ramadan Bombathon.” Islamic terrorist attacks have killed hundreds and wounded countless others. The attacks have rocked cities across the globe, including Cairo, Paris, Manchester, and London.
