Anxiety is something most adults have to cope with from time to time. Many use substances or self-medicate in order to cope with the stress of daily life. Self-medicating and drinking to cope often leads to addiction. Then the real battle begins. It’s actually been proven that nearly 63% of all women battling alcoholism also suffer from severe anxiety disorder. The study was done by the National Institute of Health. Anxiety is usually a crippling illness that causes many addicts to relapse. 

Using Meditation to Cope With Anxiety

Learning how to cope in healthy ways is therefore essential to living a happy life. Life can be hard to manage from time to time, but with the use of meditation, it can be easier to cope. Meditation can help women and men alike reduce anxiety without self-destructive behaviors like binge drinking and drug use. Also, alcohol oftentimes can have the opposite intended effect. Instead of reducing anxiety, it can actually trigger anxiety.

A viscous cycle often begins for the user. They begin to drink to avoid anxiety, only to find out the alcohol causes more anxiety. That in turn, leads to more drinking and the cycle continues till destruction. Studies have proven however, just 20 minutes of meditation 1-2 a day can have the effect an alcoholic is looking to create with alcohol. Meditation allows for a time to reconnect with source, to let go of the struggles of daily life and gives time for self-reflection. People with anxiety tend to be incredibly hyper-active to the point of being unable to relax. Like little bunnies they continually run on and on, hoping to find some peace in the next, new activity. The problem is they ultimately cause themselves more anxiety and rarely finish what they started.

Using Meditation to Cope With AnxietyMeditating allows for a shift in consciousness. Consciousness is the total firing sequence of the neurons in the brain at any given moment. Meditation allows for a change in our consciousness that in turn creates a change in emotions. You can observe your thoughts and emotions in meditation without judgement like a watcher. The art of transcendental meditation for example is the practice of becoming an observer of your thoughts so they have less of an impact on you. Any meditation will work, and there are several visualizations that can be done while meditating to help as well.

How Using Meditation to Cope With Anxiety Works

The purpose of meditation is to let go of all attachment. Attachment is the base for anxiety. Being attached to a situation, a goal or a person can cause internalized anxiety. Even attachment to past experiences or future scenarios will have serious effects on a person’s stress levels that lead to anxiety. It’s because of stress and anxiety, that daily practices of meditation is so important.

Meditation is very healing and can also release negative emotions and blocks in a natural way. If you have any issues with anxiety, past trauma or stress in general, start giving yourself 20 minutes a day to meditate. Meditation will be your key to letting go of worry and focusing yourself in the present moment. And the present moment, that is where all your power lies and the entire Universe is unfolding in every moment.
