2017 was a big year for Blake Shelton. His relationship with Gwen Stefani held steady, he released a new album, had two huge singles, and won The Voice. So as 2018 opens, we look at the top five Shelton songs from the past that you may have forgotten were his.

Written by David Kent and Kirsti Manna, “Austin” was Shelton’s 2001 debut single. Released from his first studio album, Blake Shelton, the song went to No. 1 and stayed several weeks at the top. A song about an answering machine message that relays his love to the girl who walked out on him, they lyrics wouldn’t make much sense in the 2018 world of voicemail. But it’s a sweet song that set the foundation for his career.

4. “All Over Me”

Earl Thomas Conley, Michael Pyle, and Blake Shelton co-wrote this 2001 single. It was the second song released from his debut album. It didn’t go to the top of the charts, but it did chart. And as such, it gave Shelton a firmer standing for his next studio album.

3. “Some Beach”

This 2004 single gave Shelton his third No. 1 hit. Written by Rory Lee Feek and Paul Overstreet, it is from Shelton’s second album, Blake Shelton’s Barn & Grill. The tune is a fun play on words, with “some beach” sounding quite a bit like a less innocuous insult from one man to another.

2. “She Wouldn’t Be Gone”

Shelton released this single in November 2008. Written by Jennifer Adan and Cory Batten, the song was released from his 5th studio album and was his 5th No. 1 hit (a fun coincidence there). “She Wouldn’t Be Gone” is a mournful love ballad of regret, a man looking wistfully at his past and realizing he could have kept the woman he loved.

  1. “Who Are You When I’m Not Looking”

Released in late 2010, Earl Bud Lee and John Wayne Wiggins wrote this No. 1 hit. This song, which is about a man wondering who is woman is when he’s not there, was part of a string of No. 1 hits Shelton scored around that time. In fact, 2008 and 2012, Shelton released eight singles, all of which went to No. 1.

So those are the top 5 Shelton songs you may have forgotten about. It’s easy to forget where our favorite stars began, and such fun to go back and listen to those songs that formed their career. And luckily, Shelton has lots of old hits to sit back and reminisce by.
