Jimi Hendrix is a name that is synonymous with rock ‘n roll.

Hendrix was one of the greatest musicians of all time because he could captivate audiences with a hypnotizing guitar style that sounded as though it had been brought from a different planet.

Hendrix seemingly erupted upon the music scene overnight, but the reverberations echoing from his guitar and his life can still be heard as we watch the music and mystery associated with Jimi Hendrix continue to intrigue the younger generations of today.

While many things about Jimi Hendrix are common knowledge, perhaps Jimi was still hiding a few things that the ‘I love the song Purple Haze’ people of the world still do not know…

Jimi Hendrix has gone through a few name changes since he was born.

Jimi Hendrix Purple Haze

In 1942 Jimi Hendrix was born ‘John Allen Hendrix’ in the musically famous city of Seattle, Washington. ‘John Allen’ was taken by his father James ‘Al’ Hendrix who got a divorce after he returned home World War II. John Allen Hendrix became ‘James Marshall’ Hendrix. Jimi Hendrix was not actually born until 1966 when the manager from the Animals made a suggestion to give the name Jimi a shot.

Jimi Hendrix joined the Army in 1961 and by 1962 he was a member of the “Screaming Eagles” paratroop division. However, the rock gods had other plans for this paratrooper; Hendrix was discharged a short time later following an injury sustained during a parachute jump.

Jimi Hendrix played as a session guitarist under the name ‘Jimmy James’ backing names like: Ike and Tina Turner, Sam Cooke, The Isley Brothers, and Little Richard

Chas Taylor (The Animals) was his first manager, who signed Jimi Hendrix, convincing him to return to London with him to form a new band. Jimi was hesitant, but he went with Taylor under the provision that he would be introduced to Eric Clapton of Cream. Two days later Jimi walked onstage with Ginger Baker, Jack Bruce, and Clapton for the jam of a lifetime.

Hendrix dazzled spectators because he was like a magician with his guitar playing abilities.  He could play behind his head, with his teeth, and without even touching the guitar.  Also, Hendrix was left-handed so his guitar was frequently played upside down.

When “Are You Experienced” was first released Hendrix was huge in the UK, but not very popular in the United States. It was not until Jimi Hendrix came back to the U.S. in June 1967 to play at the Monterrey International Pop Festival where he set the crowd ablaze with his performance of “Wild Thing.”

The famous Jimi Hendrix performance of “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Woodstock was not in support of the United States and the good work that we do at home and abroad.

It was a big F-You to the U.S. government for continuing the senseless war in Vietnam.  Hendrix almost did not play the American anthem at all, but he figured what better place than here and what better time than now.

Hendrix did not die from an overdose of heroin.

The official story has always been that the cause of death was asphyxiation from choking on vomit caused by a barbiturate overdose. Jimi Hendrix died by choking on his puke after taking nine of his girlfriend’s sleeping pills. However, the cause of death has been a hot topic for conspiracy theorists for decades.

Theories include suicide, murder, government involvement, and that Jimi Hendrix is actually alive on an island with Janis Joplin and Jim Morrison somewhere.

Jimi Hendrix died at the age of 27, yet he remains one of the most intriguing people in the history of music.
