The Big Bang Theory, Comic Con 2016

With one of the sitcom’s most famous episodes being centered around this holy “nerd” event, it’s not a surprise that some of the writers of the Big Bang Theory made an appearance at the 2016 Comic-Con. The panel started with a sort of recapping of the past season. There was a lot of excitement and buzz when the word came out that Amy and Sheldon would officially consummate their relationship in that season. Some other highlights included Bernadette’s pregnancy and, maybe most shockingly, Leonard’s dad running off with Sheldon’s mom.

Fans at the event got a huge surprise when it was revealed that Bernadette herself, actress Melissa Rauch was the guest moderator. Knowing how to please the fanbase, Rauch jumped right in to ask the writers about the infamous Amy and Sheldon episode. Steve Molaro admitted that since this was an event that the fan base was super hyped about, he felt pressured and agonized about getting the scene perfect. With humor, Molaro says, “he never stressed this much about losing his own virginity.”

With that said, a lot of material for the show comes from the writers’ own geeky hobbies and personal experiences. For example, the episode where the gang frantically searches for those elusive Star Wars tickets actually happened to the writers as well. But if you’re more of a “Trekie” than a “Jedi,” you may be interested in Molaro’s reminiscing of his own days fanboying at Star Trek conventions. Molaro gushes about waiting in huge lines to get George Takei’s autograph when he was only 12 years old.

The 200th episode that came with the last season was a very special episode. Old school Batman fans can rejoice because Adam West guest starred. What’s even more interesting about this fact is that Molaro admits that the scene where Adam defends himself as “top Batman” was actually written back in season 8. West was unavailable at the time.

However, the most buzzworthy reveal of all was that fans finally get to see Penny’s mother and brother in the premiere of season 10. Guess who’s playing her mom? You’re going to love this! Wait for it. None other than Katey Sagal of Married With Children, Sons of Anarchy, and Futurama fame. Something that fans may not know is that Ms. Sagal is familiar with Kaley Cuoco (Penny) and even more familiar with playing her mother. Katey Sagal actually played Cuoco’s mother on the sitcom 8 Simple Rules.

Jack McBrayer of 30 Rock will be playing Penny’s jailbird, drug dealing brother. Which I’m guessing isn’t too good for Leonard. With a famous comedy actress playing Penny’s mother and a tough drug dealer as her brother, the season 10 premiere should bring a lot of laughs. Most likely at Penny, Leonard, and Sheldon’s expense. But what of the rest of the cast? Tune in to find out! Season 10 of the Big Bang Theory will be airing on CBS on Monday, Sept. 19, at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
