Mayim Bailik, fat suit, Amy Farrah Fowler, the big bang theory

One of the most common questions asked about Mayim Bialik’s character, Amy Farrah Fowler, on the Big Bang Theory is whether or not the actress is wearing a “fat suit” when portraying her character. The answer is no. Many fans have speculated that Bialik looks “bigger” as Amy Farrah Fowler. The reason for that is because the character’s personality needs to be shown physically as well as through her actions.

Amy’s look is what someone might call “frumpy librarian chic.” She wears a lot of grey pencil skirts, long sleeve shirts, and wooly sweaters. Amy also sports a pair of very large cat eye glasses. This frumpy style look can make anyone seem to be a bit bigger than they actually are. According to some fans on a Big Bang Theory fan board, when Bailik was featured on an episode of What Not To Wear, her clothing style was actually very similar to Amy Farrah Fowler. When she is not attending any red carpet or award events, that is. This just further proves my point that I have made in other articles about Bialik being very similar to her character. She may just be the most similar to her character in comparison to the rest of the cast.

However, Mayim Bailik did make an appearance on the series Fat Actress. She played a fictionalized version of herself. No word on whether or not she had to wear a fat suit though. You would have to check out the episode for yourself. I have to admit that I was very surprised to discover that one of the most common question asked about Mayim Bailik was about the fat suit debate. I believe that this could be a product of our country’s obsession with body image. If you have seen Bialik apart from her Amy Farrah Fowler persona, you would know that she appears to be of a very healthy weight. She is neither too big, nor too skinny.

Bailik is also a long practicing vegan and even has her own cookbook called “Mayim’s Vegan Table.” This concludes that she watches what she eats and chooses to lead a healthier lifestyle. But in actuality, the public should not be so concerned about Bialik’s weight, unless she looked ill or rundown.

Putting pressure on a person’s physical appearance when there is no reason to can cause damage to that person. This is especially accurate for those that lead high profile lives, like celebrities. Just look at the fiasco that surrounded Britney Spears in the later 2000’s when she had too much pressure put on her personal life. She had a mental breakdown and even shaved her head. True, Bialik may not be easily swayed, but enough banter can cause anyone to crack, even if it’s a small crack.

Then again this could just be a very innocent little question. I just implore fans to not take it somewhere ugly. It’s always good to inquire as long as it is in the right taste.
