Former President, George W. Bush, came out swinging against President Trump on Thursday. At an event hosted by the George W. Bush Institute, the 43rd U.S. president rattles off a laundry list of complaints about the current commander-in-chief. Unfortunately for him, he completely misses the mark.

Bush’s public speech is full of insults against President Trump’s policies. He calls Trump’s tough stance on immigration, bigoted and cruel. “Our young people need positive role models,” he says. “Bullying and prejudice in our public life sets a national tone, provides permission for cruelty and bigotry, and compromises the moral education of children.”

Moreover, Bush appears to comment on the president’s response to the Charlottesville riots. Not mentioning Trump by name, he suggests that all people are American regardless of their religion or where they come from. “Bigotry or white supremacy in any form is blasphemy against the American creed,” says Bush.

If you remember, President Trump strongly condemned the violence on both sides after Charlottesville. However, never once did he say anything about the religion, race, or ethnicity of protesters. Holding people accountable for their actions is not mean-spirited or bigoted, it is responsible governing.

Not to mention, protecting America’s borders isn’t at all isolationism, it’s realism. Back in 2006, Bush seemed to get that point. In fact, he gave the first primetime presidential address on the issue saying, “We’re a nation of immigrants, but also a nation of laws.” Also, Bush strongly advocated for reforms to deal with the problem.

Specifically, in 2005 Bush ends the long-standing “catch and release” immigration policy. Why? Because it “encourages contempt of law.” He also increased workplace enforcement and border patrol funding. And yet, somehow, President Trump is a racist and bigot for taking the very same measures.

One has to wonder if George W. is secretly a liberal. Probably not.  Most likely, he is just another Washington “has-been” trying to stay relevant. Politicians have made that an art form. Criticizing the policies of others while selectively forgetting their own, is becoming par for the course.

Although, their hypocrisy is reaching new heights now that President Trump is in the White House.
