After a long year of hearing nothing except “Russia, Russia, Russia,” Trump supporters are tired. Many of them are also angry to boot. So angry, in fact, that they are stepping up to help retired Lt. General Michael Flynn.
The former national security adviser has been battling with Robert Mueller and the FBI for months. While he clearly made a mistake lying to Vice President Mike Pence, a lot of people feel he paid the price when he lost his job.
However, as you all well know, Flynn’s problems didn’t end there. After months of harassment and a growing mountain of debt, he pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI last week. In a statement on his plea deal, Flynn condemned the “outrageous” investigation.
“It has been extraordinarily painful to endure these many months of false accusations of “treason” and other outrageous acts,” he said. “My guilty plea and agreement to cooperate with the Special Counsel’s Office reflect a decision I made in the best interests of my family and of our country.”
Of course, a plea deal was in the best interest of Flynn and his family. If he hadn’t accepted it, they would all be living on streets next year. Mueller wasn’t going to stop until he had a sacrificial lamb and Flynn served his purpose well.
Used and Abused
Nevertheless, Trump supporters recognize the position Flynn and his family are in. So they decided to make his Christmas a little brighter. A couple in Tennessee, instead of buying gifts for each other, contributed $300 to Flynn’s legal defense fund.
“He served our country,” said Johnna Beuerlein told Newsweek. “When we were down, he had our backs, so I feel like this is the time we need to have his back.” With regards to his guilty plea, Beuerlein added, “I just don’t believe he intended to do anything wrong.”
An elderly woman in North Carolina also sent money to help Flynn. Her reason for donating pretty much sums up the entirety of the Russia investigation. “I donated because the man is a patriot and is being used to “prove” a lie! Anything to make the president look bad,” she said. “General Flynn deserves our help. He served us!”
Michael’s brother, Joseph, thanked everyone who contributed on Twitter. “We woke up to a huge outpouring of love and support for mikeflynnlegaldefensefund.org, thank you friends!” There is no word on how much money the crowdfunding effort has raised
