The infamous Trump Dossier is back in the spotlight this week, and so is Barack Obama. There are several issues surrounding the salacious dossier, not the least of which is the purpose behind its creation. But, thanks to a new investigative report, we could be getting an answer to that question.

Specifically, Congress is now investigating allegations that Obama used unsubstantiated intelligence to spy on President Trump. According to congressional aides, House and Senate leaders are looking into the DOJ and FBI utilizing the dossier to illegally obtain surveillance warrants from the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Court.

Back in April, CNN confirms that the FBI used the dossier to secure permission to spy on Trump associate Carter Page. Page worked on the campaign as an advisor on national security matters. Former FBI Director, James Comey, also reveals that the dossier is one of the sources helping to bolster the Russia collusion investigation.

Consequently, at the beginning of October, the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence subpoenaed Fusion GPS. Fusion is the questionable democratic opposition research firm behind the dossier. The group, under investigation since June, has ties to the Democratic party and Hillary Clinton.

Interestingly, Fusion co-owners are refusing to testify before the committee, opting instead to plead the fifth. Curiously, House Democrats are opposing the subpoena because it was issued by GOP Rep. Devin Nunes of California, the committee’s chairman. Nunes removed himself from the Russia inquiry but retains all other chair responsibilities.

Nonetheless, these new allegations are raising some serious questions. Was the dossier created as a means of justifying wiretapping the Trump campaign? Is this indeed a liberal effort to smear the president? If so, who is responsible? Clinton? Obama? The Democratic National Committee? Maybe, it is all of the above.

Regardless, Americans on both sides of the political aisle should be concerned. Trump was a private citizen at the time of these wiretaps, not an elected official. If the government and courts did this to him, they could do it to anyone.
